You'll Be Sharing This Video

It's been nearly 16 years since Leon Lett taught the world to not touch the ball after a missed field goal.

A high school football game ended tragically this weekend, when a potential game-winning field by Jericho Mount Mansfield High in Vermont fell very short and into the arms of a waiting Otter Valley High player. Otter Valley had just finished a remarkable comeback to take a 2-point lead with 16 seconds left and the missed desperation field goal as time expired seemed to seal the deal.

Except the Otter Valley player took the ball on the fly, ran out of the end zone with his arms raised in celebration, then spiked the ball on the ground. As the former Dallas Cowboy could tell you, the play was not yet dead. An alert Mount Mansfield player scooped up the ball and ran into the end zone. Touchdown. Game over.

Let's go to the tape:

Merci Vraiment!

Pardon my French. It simply means: Thank you kindly.

Sat down at my desk to begin the new day and was greeted by a very kind note from a long-time member who included a very generous and unexpected payment for services.

The payment was for the last two months of Private Play Service that this member says he took advantage of and did quite well. This is a service that has cost $895 per month over the last decade but I suspended the fee and have given it away at no cost during August and September.

I typically send out one or two plays each day with my own brand of analysis. Long time members would tell you that my write ups are clear, well-researched and reliable. I take great pride in their preparation.

The member was very kind and sent significantly more than the service would have cost if he paid up front with it. That really staggered me.

That gesture was not expected, is very appreciated and humbled me first thing this morning.

I write about it here because although I sent the obligatory thank you note, I wanted the member to fully understand my gratitude. This is the second such payment that has been received this month - by two separate members -- both caught me by surprise. Thanks so much for the respect.

Thanks again. One thing that this generous member does not know is that he was just dropped in to receive the daily Private Play Report through the end of the year. That's how I show my appreciation. Thanks again - really... Thanks again.

In this industry - Tuesdays are usually a day when we quickly break down the past weekend and start working at the upcoming week of games. The past weekend was about as unpleasant as a weekend can go. Sports Monitor's Executive Selections had a terrible College Football week and it was followed up by a terrible Sunday in NFL action as well. It was good to see that the Monday Night Football Game went our way. We have six winning weeks behind us and one very nasty losing week. The entire football handicapping industry took it on the nose as many matchups and trends failed to produce the predictable outcome that we bet on.

With that, I'll let you know that the fee for Executive Service through the Superbowl is now only $625. This free is discounted form the usual fee of $1025 that we would have charged in past seasons. When you join us, you'll be an insider to all the plays from all the major services we monitor, plus you'll receive all of Sports Monitor's award winning Executive Selections.

The new week of football kicks off tomorrow with a nationally televised college football game -yes - on a Wednesday. Tomorrow, I'll set up the new week here and do my best to let you know about what I expect for the weekend ahead. College football weeks four and five are usually very predictable.

Another Reason To Hate Oakland

The worst quote ever that some people seem to think is a good quote.

" I would much rather be feared than respected."

~ Al Davis

Has anyone else who is not a sociopath ever been impressed with that? Didn't think so. By the way, if you disagree with me, chances are, you really are a sociopath.

I'd rather be writing about something else today but the office is a bit busy today - I'll be doing a recap of the weekend tomorrow, after winning the Monday Night Football event tonight. Right?

College Football Bad

"Above anything else, I hate to lose."
~Jackie Robinson

I'll be recapping the football weekend after it's concluded. Today, it's all about doing the best job and have another winning day. Good luck everyone.

Vince says: You Can't Beat This

One of the first emails that I answered this morning was from a long-time former member who was wondering when the membership fee was going to start coming down.

This Monday, the fee for Sports Monitor's Executive Service was going to be at $625. By the way, This is for the same program that used to cost $1045 at this time.

I've brought back friendlier membership fees to make it easier during this time.

Anyway, if you are looking to get aboard, I just changed the fee to $625 for anyone who hits that "BUY NOW" button to the right. I've got a thing about making things equal across the board. I cannot charge one guy $695 - another member $625. That's how I roll.

While You Were Sleeping

As I write this at 6:15 am Pacific, the Hawaii football team should have landed back on the Big Island, Hawaii's charter flight lifted off at Las Vegas McCarren Airport at 5 am Eastern.

UNLV 34
HAWAII 33

From this morning's Honolulu newspaper:
LAS VEGAS — This city is 2,015 feet above sea level.

With 36 seconds remaining in last night's game, Nevada-Las Vegas wideout Phillip Payne's hands were 10 feet higher.
Blanketed by 5-foot-9 cornerback Tank Hopkins, the 6-foot-3 Payne cut to the corner of the end zone. Payne then soared to grab the decisive 15-yard pass and boost UNLV to a 34-33 football victory over Hawai'i at Sam Boyd Stadium.

For those of you who stayed up on the East coast to take in this thriller, you got to sleep around 3 am.

At Sports Monitor yesterday, the Executive Selections finished at 4-5 against the pointspread and we lost 1.2 units. Let's have a great Sunday.

Second Cheerleader Picture - 2009 Football

When your school is just blocks from the Las Vegas Strip, you can imagine is there would be some pretty girls that go to school there. Have you ever seen the show girls and the cocktail waitresses on The Strip? Some of the most beautiful women in the world are right here in Fabulous Las Vegas.

The UNLV cheerleaders represent some of the best in college football and college basketball. Two weeks ago, I had the chance to sit down at the pregame season ticket holder party with the UNLV cheer girls and they are a very pleasant group of young women to be around.

I'll feature one of them today and look forward to the win over Hawaii tonight. Late kick off tonight.
I'll be tailgating in the west parking lot beginning at 5 pm Pacific. Just look for the righteous grill and the serious touch football game. I've also got the Budweiser full keg on ice that everyone that passes gets a hit off of.

Five for Five

After five weeks of the 2009 football betting season, Sports Monitor has posted five winning weeks.

Sports Monitor's Executive Selections are 6-3 against the pointspread for the week heading into tonight's Monday events.

If you're keeping score at home - that puts us at 21-11 against the pointspread for the season.

Oh yes, our members also enjoy all the plays from all the major sports services we monitor. It's only $695 through the Superbowl.

That "BUY NOW" button is looming at the right side of this page. It's just one inch to the right and three inches up.

Many new members are receiving Greg Allen's Private Plays free of charge this month. Greg's Private Plays are always very well-researched and carefully analyzed. Greg has lost only three of his last 18 Private Play releases. How about that?

Here's your Wooderson moment.

Sunday, September 13, 2009

Cris Collinsworth is Wooderson

I don’t know how you can watch this clip of Cris Collinsworth from a 1980's halftime piece for Monday Night Football and NOT think of Matthew Mcconaughey's character from Dazed and Confused. They are the same guy.

The.Same.Guy.

In the clip, Collinsworth--- then a wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals professes his penchant for drawing the interest of high school girls, quipping, “Fourteen to eighteen, I’m a big star with them. As soon as they mature, after they turn 18, they start to figure it out.” And he said this on network television. Goodell would have any NFL player castrated if he said that today. The 80's were a good time.

Anyway, I thought that I would look for something funny this morning since it's 6 am and I just got home from the UNLV/Oregon State game five hours ago. For those of you on the East coast - the game concluded about 2:15 am Eastern, Oregon State 23 UNLV 21. Don't want to talk about it.

OK, I'll say one thing. Referees who call pass interference on a third-and-26 from your own 15-yard line late in the game on a ball that looks overthrown should be interrogated by Jack Bauer.
Really. I do not want to talk about it.

Sports Monitor's Executive Selections went 3-2 against the pointspread. I'll be recapping them tomorrow.

Don't forget - you can get all of Sports Monitor's Executive Selections and all the plays from the major sports services for only $695. Just hit that "BUY NOW" button on the right.

Greg's Private Plays have been on fire. Greg has lost just two of his last 13 Private Play selections. Here is the exact writeup from Tuesday.

My Private Play for Tuesday Major League Baseball is the Philadelphia Phillies.

PHILADELPHIA -145 (Martinez)
AT
WASHINGTON (Lannan)
7:05 pm Eastern

The Phillies just got swept by Houston this weekend and they'll be a bit grumpy. Washington offers the perfect remedy. Washington has lost eight of their last nine games and 16 of their last 20. They are a dependable "go against" team. My first thought was, "Philadelphia always beats Washington". Hmmm, perhaps that was my fourth thought. Then, I looked it up and saw that I was correct - the Phillies have won their last seven against the Nationals. Pedro Martinez looks to follow his masterful performance in beating Tim Lincecum and the Giants in a 2-1 victory last Thursday. The Phillies have won all five of Pedro's starts and he carries a 23-3 strikeout-walk ratio into this start. Philadelphia has also won its last six games in which it has faced John Lannan. Lannan is 0-5 with a 5.89 ERA in seven career outings against the Phillies. Lannan is 0-1 with a 7.97 ERA in his last four starts. He gave up five runs over five innings last Tuesday in a 7-0 loss to San Diego. I'm betting that Philadelphia breaks their losing streak tonight.

Did you know? The Nationals are 3-15 in Lannan's last 18 starts during Game One of a series.

WINNER Philadelphia 5 Washington 3

My next Private Play will be delivered late Wednesday morning.

The highlight of the weekend was our top play on Saturday, our Three Star College Game of the Week - Missouri. Missouri (+7) ripped Illinois 37-9. Now THAT'S a Game of The Week!

Football Block Of The Week

I have no idea what Labor Day is and why it's important to me so I'm not going to force up a cheesy topical puff piece about this holiday in my daily message here.

I thought that I'd have a bit more fun again today and show you my block of the week.

Oh, and by the way - I know that you watched that video of Szandora more than once. Since she's a local Las Vegan and a friend, I am considering making her my official blog model.

Post Game Celebration - Las Vegas Style

If you can read this at the time I'm publishing (Sunday morning 6:50 am), chances are you were NOT at the UNLV post game party last night. It's a light sports schedule today, just a couple late starting college football games, an evening NASCAR race and Major League Baseball.

Double Down Saloon
Known the world over as the Happiest Place on Earth, the Double Down Saloon has been bringing a much needed sophistication to Las Vegas since 1992. Interplanetary abstract. Urban decay. The Anti-Vegas. Double Down is indeed a clubhouse for the lunatic fringe.

DRINK * SMOKE * GAMBLE

Live music. Pool. Pinball. Hot chicks. Bums, punks, hipsters, bohemians, rockabilly greasers and regular joes. Touring bands and Hollywood types kicking back away from the tourists. Always expect the unexpected.

Absolutely -- The best after game party in Las Vegas. Only a minute from UNLV.

You have not had your ultimate Las Vegas experience until you've seen Thee Swank Bastards with Szandora play a set at The Double Down Saloon.

72% Pointspread Winners

My Executive Selections were released to members at 5:30 pm Eastern last night and they both made it a comfortable night for bettors.

Two units Miami Dolphins (+2) won outright at New Orleans. That brings Sports Monitor's NFL preseason pointspread record to 12 wins and 5 losses - 71% winners.

We opened the 2009 College Football season with a one unit play on Boise State (-3). The Broncos got out to a 19-0 lead and just walked it in. Of course, I had to deal with that whole dilemma of what to watch, the Boise State game or the Michael Jackson funeral. Nah.
This should be a wonderful weekend of college football as games will be played and televised Friday, Saturday, Sunday and on Labor Day Monday. If you haven't seen the schedule yet, it's an interesting opening week college schedule that finishes up Monday with the Miami-Florida/Florida State prime time contest.

Overall, that brings our 2009 football pointspread overall total to a wonderful 13 wins and 5 losses - 72% pointspread winners. That's as good as it gets and I'm very proud to put up numbers like that. Let's keep up the good work - I pledge to do my best all season.

My Private Plays went 1-1 last night and I've now won seven of my last eight Private Plays.

Here you go.

Wednesday September 2nd
My Private Play for Wednesday is the Chicago Cubs.

HOUSTON (Paulino)
AT
CHICAGO -210 (Lilly)
2:20 pm Eastern

I do not like giving out plays at this price but half the games on the schedule today are at least 2-1 --- and for good reasons. Today, I'm betting against another minor league callup. Houston is going to give Felipe Paulino another chance at a start. Paulino will make his first start since July 3rd, when he gave up nine hits and nine runs (eight earned) in two innings in a 13-0 loss to the Giants. He's been relegated to bullpen duty since, mostly in mop-up roles. It's hard to imagine that this guy will even make the team next season. Paulino has a great fastball but it does not fool anyone - in fact, opponents have hit .371 off Paulino on the road this season. Over his two year career, opponents have hit .322 off Paulino. Chicago sends Ted Lilly to the hill and he's hoping for a bit of support from his team. Lilly has notched three consecutive solid starts since his return from the disabled list on August 17th. He is 0-1 but has posted a 1.86 ERA in that stretch - as he's been backed by one total run of support. Lilly has a quality start in all 10 of his outings at Wrigley Field and a 1.92 ERA there - holding opponents to a .220 batting average. Ted Lilly has a 3.57 ERA in winning all three starts versus the Astros this season, and is 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA in seven starts against them dating back to 2007. The Astros are 6-18 on the road since July 18th.

Did you know? The Cubs are 23-6 in Lilly's last 29 home starts.

Result: WIN Chicago 2 Houston 0

Tuesday September 1st
My Private Play for Tuesday is the Boston Red Sox.

BOSTON -160 (Lester)
OVER
TAMPA BAY (Sonnanstine)
7:05 pm Eastern

Boston is going to make make that Wild Card slot as their team is the strongest it's been all season. Boston has won 10 of their last 13 overall. Boston's team batting average is .305 over their last 10 games and they've hit .315 off right-handers. The Rays will get their first experience of life without Scott Kazmir tonight - this was his spot in the rotation. Tampa Bay will be starting one of their September callups tonight - Andy Sonnanstine who was sent down in June after compiling a 6.61 ERA in 15 starts. Sonnanstine's biggest problem was with right-handed hitters, allowing a .370 average. Triple-A opponents batted .323 off Sonnanstine the last three months. This appears to be a quick fix to fill a spot in the rotation and Sonnanstine was rested and able to step in here. It's my guess that this will be his last start of the season - he's just not ready for prime time. Boston's Jon Lester has posted a quality start in each of his past five outings - and 15 of his last 16 -- allowing three earned runs or fewer in 15 of his previous 16 appearances dating back to May 31. I'm looking for the Red Sox to reverse their recent slump at Tropicana Field and against the Rays. The Rays have fallen five game back of the Red Sox in the Wild card chase and the Red Sox look to silent the cowbells. It's the Red Sox over the Rays tonight.

Did you know? The Red Sox are 41-14 in their last 55 games following an off day.

Result: WIN Boston 8 Tampa Bay 4

Monday, August 31st
My Private Play for Monday August 31st is the New York Yankees.

NEW YORK YANKEES -170 (Pettitte)
AT
BALTIMORE (Guthrie)
7:05 pm Eastern

The Baltimore Orioles have lost their last eight Monday games and the news get worse. The Yankees are in town. The Yankees have taken 16 of the last 19 against the Orioles. New York has won seven in a row against Baltimore this year while outscoring the Orioles by nearly three runs per game. New York starter Andy Pettitte is undefeated in six starts since July 30, going 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA (38.0 innings, 11 earned runs) over that span. Pettitte is 25-6 lifetime versus the Orioles. The Yankees are on fire and are coming in off a three game sweep of the White Sox - New York outscored Chicago 23-5 in the series. Baltimore is just 14-29 since the All-Star break while New York has been heating up all summer. I'm on the Bombers tonight.

Did you know? The Yankees have won 44 of their last 60 games.

Result: WIN New York 5 Baltimore 1

Sunday August 30th
My NFL Private Play is Chicago/Denver over 38 points.

CHICAGO 38
AT
DENVER -2.5
8 pm Eastern

This is one of those events that on any other day would be just another NFL preseason game. Yes, it's just another preseason game, but this one just so happens to be nationally televised by a major network - in a Sunday prime time slot. So basically, nobody wants to look stupid - and everyone wants to look good. Especially the starting quarterbacks and the head coaches. Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler will be the lead story and they'll know it. The Denver crowd won't miss a beat. Jay Cutler returns to Invesco Field to a crowd that will boo his every move. Kyle Orton has reportedly struggled to learn Chicago's offense (3 interceptions in week one). Orton actually went 18 for 26 last week against Seattle and is working diligently to understand the playbook. He'll be throwing more tonight. Both starting QB's should still be in this game in the third quarter. Throw in the wide receiver controversy at Denver and I look forward to a couple offenses who try to make things happen tonight. I noticed a lot of scoring in the NFL this week - for week number three - a week that's known for stating QB's to get their last real game situation workout in. I'm betting that the Bears and Broncos go over the total tonight on NBC-TV.

Result: WIN Chicago 27 Denver 17

Saturday August 29th
My Private Play for Saturday is the San Francisco Giants.

COLORADO (Marquis)
AT
SAN FRANCISCO +105 (Zito)
9:05 pm Eastern

I was reading a news report out of San Francisco about last night's game. It said, "It was unseasonably warm for a summer night in the Bay Area: 75 degrees at first pitch." I was at a Triple-A game last night here in Las Vegas and it was 105 degrees at first pitch. Go figure. Tonight, I'm betting that San Francisco closes the gap on the Colorado Rockies. The Giants have been very reliable at AT&T Park this season and have won 39 of their last 58 home games. Left-hander Barry Zito faced these Rockies last Monday - giving up three hits, no earned runs and went away without a decision. If you know more about that game, he actually did not deserve a decision - either way. Just my opinion. Barry Zito has faced the Rockies twice this season, pitched well both times and has held them to a .119 batting average. Colorado has been weak against left-handers on the road all season while posting a .210 batting average. Barry Zito is in the midst of his hottest streak since signing as a free agent with the team in 2007 - his ERA is 2.08 since the All-Star break. This is the time of the season that Zito typically heats up - Going into this season, Zito was 70-36 after the All-Star break with a 3.47 ERA. Before the break, his numbers were 53-57 with a 4.14 ERA. Zito's 2-2 with a 2.03 ERA during his career against the Rockies. This year his ERA against the Rockies is 0.00 in two starts, both no-decisions. The Giants again tonight.

Result: WIN San Francisco 5 Colorado 3
----------------------------------------
Friday August 28th
My Private Play today is the San Francisco Giants.

COLORADO (Jiminez)
AT
SAN FRANCISCO -130 (Lincicum)
10:15 pm Eastern

They call San Francisco pitcher Tim Lincicum "The Freak". Lincicum is 7-1 at AT&T Park this season, owns a 1.98 ERA and has struck out 113 batters in 95 innings pitched. These teams are in a dog fight for the NL playoffs - I'll be careful to avoid the conversation about first place versus wild card here. The Giants are a very strong home team and have gone 41-21 at AT&T this season. This is a very good pitching matchup as Colorado has their ace on the hill today as well - I'll take the Giants on the strength of their team at home this season.

Did you know? The Rockies are 10-23 in Jimenez's last 33 road starts.

Result: WIN San Francisco 2 Colorado 0

Inferno

It's Tuesday and I'm not up to writing anything about sports or wagering this morning. As this blog grows and becomes a branch of the website, this blog will take on a few meanings - at least that's the plan.

It looks as if the inferno in Southern California may be the biggest story of the day across the land. If this fire was near New York City - the media would be covering it wall-to-wall. Certainly you've seen the pictures out of Southern California - it's shocking and a real shame.

We had some huge wild fires near Las Vegas a few years back and I had the privilege to volunteer to feed and bring aid to the young people who work to contain these blazes. I must tell you that it's unreal what these fire fighters go through, I can still recall sitting around the camp and listening to their harrowing stories when they could be relieved and take a short break.

The California wildfire is impacting the weather here in Las Vegas as the smoke has filled our skies the last few days. Our skies are usually very clear. As you can see in the above photo - taken yesterday - it's tough to see and breathe in Las Vegas. That's pure smoke. The way I see it - Today's forecast calls for partly smoky skies and a high reaching near 104 degrees.

In Southern California - it's considerably hotter. Good luck California.
