Loading Up For Week Number One

There are no football games on tap until Thursday this week, so, I'll just drop one of the funniest things I've seen in days on you.

Later this week, we have the closeout of the 2010 NFL preseason and the start of the college football season. The new week of football kicks off Thursday - with NFL preseason action and seven major college events. More on that tomorrow.

For today, let's take on the guys at Cami-Secret.

If you’ve watched a decent amount of television this summer, you’ve likely seen the annoying and ponderously long ads for Cami Secret — the bra attachment that allows women to hide their cleavage when they don’t want to be troubled with a camisole.

This parody of the Cami Secret ad is perfect. And I’m not just saying that as a sexist meathead who likes cleavage. This is just a bunch of jokes that takes the commercial’s hanging curves and hits them out of the park.  The “Nice white wine, Dick” moment alone is funnier then the entire series of “Two and a Half Men.”

Oh, the original buzzkill.

Worst Sound In Sports - PING!

Baseball has its own soundtrack. The crack! of the bat, the roar of the crowd, the food vendors with their cries of "COLD beer! Getcha coldbeer HEAH!"

The sounds of baseball resonates in our brains and in our veins. It echoes in our society's collective souls. Anyone who grew up in this country, whether you played baseball or not, knows what that crack sounds like. Hell, you can hear it now - can't you?

Little League World Series: The cheers, the yells, the ping of the bat. Wait, the "ping" of the bat?!

That evil sound of "pinggggg'' when a baseball hits an aluminum bat gets my vote for the worst sound. Not only does the bat sound awful, it's dangerous to pitchers, especially at the youth level. The sweet spot is bigger on these bats - more comebackers - they say. Some insist at a higher speed.

In 1924 a patent was issued to William Shroyer for the first metal baseball bat. It's true - you can look it up.

I've been enjoying the Little League World Series this week and the aluminum bats continue to make me shake my head. I've read about the controversy of ball speed after contact and the many lawsuits - I do not believe that the ball comes off the aluminum bat any faster than it comes off ash. That's an entirely different argument.

But the ping. The sound is not a good sound.
Sound spectra produced by wood and aluminum bats.

Here's my vote that the Little League World Series would be much better using the old Louisville Slugger.

Here is the best use of an aluminum bat.
Listen for the sound of contact - PING!

Two blondes and a Jordon

Central Florida University baller Marcus Jordan, son of that one guy who used to play for the Bulls, had himself a nice little visit to Vegas last week with brother Jeffrey and a fellow UCFer, junior point guard A.J. Rompza. Now, the important thing to remember about Vegas is that you have to go in on a budget…unless your dad happens to be Michael Jordan.

Marcus Jordan later posted on his Twitter account about the players’ visits to Haze Nightclub and Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria Hotel and Casino City Center.

Last night was stupid,” Marcus Jordan wrote on his Twitter account. “… 35k at Haze… Totals 50k something the whole day.. Damn!! Going to the pool again today.. Gotta relax!”

Hey, good on him. I’m sure he his dad has the money and that he’s showing his son the ins and outs of losing more money than most people make in a year. That said, I couldn’t spend that kind of money if I was there for a month. And paid rent. Wait, I do live in Las Vegas and I still don't spend that in a month. Oh, and I forgot the best part – Marcus is only 20 years old. Eh, whatever. It’s not like he was soliciting johns in the parking lot. As far as I know…

Brigham Young University - Going Indie?

In Utah, they call it - "The Y". Gag me with a book of Mormon.

More than 50 programs in major college football history have tried the independent route, and several — including Utah State — have struck out on their own more than once, without the benefits of conference affiliation.

Heading into the 2010 college football season, three independents remain: Army, Navy and Notre Dame, which has been an independent throughout its long and glorious — but fading — football history.

Perhaps that’s why many college football experts say that Brigham Young University could be making a big mistake. The Cougars were on the verge of declaring their independence Wednesday before their plan was sabotaged by the conference to which they currently belong, the Mountain West Conference.

The Mountain West Conference is the conference I watch most closely - it's home to my beloved UNLV Rebels. So yeah - I hate BYU and the huge contingent of obnoxious fans that litter the Thomas & Mack during basketball games and converge on Sam Boyd Stadium every two years for the home and home series. I had a BYU family sit behind me two seasons ago for a game and it almost got messy. Hell, it was messy in the line to get through security as they all talked trash - at a road game. Classy.

BYU has until Sept. 1 to inform the Mountain West Conference that it is bolting if it hopes to strike out on its own for the 2011 season. Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson confirmed in a conference call Thursday that the Cougars were on the precipice of announcing independence the middle of last week — pending the approval of their owner, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints — but had to back away when plans to park their other sports in the WAC hit a major snag.

Worth repeating -- pending the approval of their owner, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

BYU fans believe they have some "great institutional reputation", others might consider it has a "great institutional reputation of arrogance". I'm of that opinion. Thinking that BYU is arrogant? ---> That's not exactly an exclusive club.

BYU -- Just go already. I'd love not to sit next to you at games.

Brett Farve - Record Holder

I stopped by the NBC-TV website this morning and they are running stories about the Vikings and Brett Farve. I threw up a little in my mouth. Yep, NBC (Al Michaels) is really going to really play up the Farve thing tonight with their prime time telecast of the Vikings/San Francisco game. Yeah, Farve is starting... he'll take about 10 snaps and collect the paycheck - and some headlines. Just go away.

Number four --- The only NFL quarterback ever to throw for 300 interceptions.

The only member of the 300 Club. Just saying.

Greece Versus Serbia

Time out for a good fight - via Euro Basketball.

Basketball teams from Serbia and Greece brawled at at the Acropolis Tournament in Athens. It ended with Nenad Krstic of the Oklahoma City throwing a chair that hit Greece center Yannis Bouroussis.

Krstic was held in police custody but has been released.

Leave it to a Serbian to horribly imitate he saw on 80s American television. Macho Man Randy Savage would have bitch slapped Kristic for throwing the chair instead using it as a bludgeoning tool.

OK then. Having said that - there are 11 NFL preseason games on tap today. Let's roll.

Crossbar Rejection

Near the end of the Ravens-Panthers Thursday night preseason game, backup quarterback Troy Smith took off on a run that resulted in a touchdown. Once in the endzone, he handed the rock off to his lineman Joe Reitz in order to let the big fella celebrate (they so rarely get the touchdown spotlight, after all). Reitz obviously didn't have anything planned, so he went for the old standby "goalpost dunk."

One problem: he got denied.

The most awkward part about Reitz being denied is that Reitz played basketball for four years at Western Michigan, where ended up pretty high on the school's all-time records list for points and rebounds. He's also 6'7" which means there's literally zero excuse for not being able to throw it down, big fella.

Yeah, they did their best to be cool about it.

OK, Let's talk about four more days of NFL preseason football this weekend.

10 Wins - 2 Losses

Our members enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2009 Football Season as I went 10-2 against the pointspread during the first three weeks of the 2009 NFL Preseason. I did not have a losing week last year until the eight week of the handicapping season.

While you were watching NASCAR

Tina Thompson of the Los Angeles Sparks put an end to our long national nightmare last Sunday by finally becoming the WNBA’s all-time leading scorer. Until Sunday’s game against the San Antonio Silver Stars, I was so on edge during Thompson’s assault on Lisa Leslie’s record – which I dubbed “The Chase” – I couldn’t bring myself to even watch WNBA games. [facetious button off]

The 35-year-old Thompson, a 6’2″ forward, took 14 long years to break Leslie’s mark, and I give her serious credit for her perseverance. Hell, one WNBA game is excruciating, I can’t imagine someone lasting through 14 years of them. It must have felt like she was on a life-long episode of Fear Factor. Actually, more like a life-long episode of something really boring, like whatever it is they show on CNBC.

So did Thompson break the least important major record in sports? Yes, yes she did. At least I’ll make the assumption she didn’t use steroids in the process, though, so I am going to give her props for that.

Does anyone care? I’m sure someone cares, I just don’t know who they are or what planet they live on. In fact, I doubt I’ll ever meet anyone who doesn’t think Tina Thompson was an original cast member of In Living Color.

It seems safe to say that 50 years days from now Tina Thompson’s name will be about as well-remembered to history as Roger Connor’s. You know, the guy who had the career home run record before Babe Ruth.

Exit Stage LEFT - Please

NBC executives announced that Keith Olbermann - the worst announcer/anchor in the world -- is no longer on the Sunday Night Football telecast. One down, a few more to go.

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Kickoff is at 8 PM Eastern

I will release a rated Executive Selection for tonight's contest between Cincinnati and Dallas. Last season, I did not post a loss until my fifth Executive Selection - ultimately, winning 10 of my first 12 releases. The two losses were only one unit wagers.

As I write, it's about 6 AM here in the desert and I'm preparing on spending the morning on campus at UNLV to enjoy the 2nd day of fall football practice. After yesterday's practice, I walked with the key players to this years team as they headed back to the training building. It was a very interesting conversation with some very intelligent young gentlemen.

This morning's practice will be a bit more vigorous.

Day One - Fall Football Practice

Woke up to a very decent 79 degree temperature (on the way to a cool 100 later) here at my new home near the base of Red Rock Canyon. It's another beautiful day in Fabulous Las Vegas.

It's 6:30 AM here in Las Vegas and I'm moments from heading out to the first day of UNLV's first day of fall football practice. The Rebels have a new head coach and their most challenging schedule of all time. It's going to be a very tall order to make it back to a bowl game.

I'll be back later today to talk about the fabulous preseason of NFL handicapping I enjoyed last year and to tell you more about the upcoming season of honest sports handicapping from Greg Allen's Sports Monitor.

2010 Football Season

The NFL kicks it off this Sunday with the annual Hall of Fame Game. I look forward to another huge start with pre-season football - just as I did last year. I posted a winning week every week of the 2009 football pre-season. More on that tomorrow. If you're ready to start winning this weekend, join today and do not miss my report for the Hall of Fame game.
