Things I Love

UNLV Football
I support my local teams as much as anyone else who is proud of their region. I'm a fixture at UNLV games throughout the year, no matter what the sport is. Football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and many other sports as well.

The UNLV football program is a relatively small program but it brings endless hours of excitement to me. I'm a regular at their practices and I follow the team year-round. Homecoming week brings daily/nightly events. Next year is finally here and dare I say it - The Rebels will be going to a bowl game this season. Mark it down.

The Rebels return four offensive line starters from last year's team that allowed just 14 sacks in 12 games - ranking them among the best in the nation.

Starting quarterback Omar Clayton returns as does wide receiver Ryan Wolfe. Ryan Wolfe will be playing on Sundays next year - throw the ball to him, he's money.

The big question will be UNLV's defensive line. It appears that they are bigger and faster than what they showed last season - the Rebels were among the worst Division-1 teams in sacks and tackles for a loss in 2008.

Before I go on with 3000 words here, I'll back down and predict that the Rebels are a surprise team this year in the Mountain West Conference which will feature no less than three Top-25 teams, TCU, BYU and Utah.

The Rebels open with three home games this year while playing seven home games overall. The Rebels open up against Sacramento State this Saturday night and face Top-25 ranked Oregon State in week two. I'm calling for the Rebels to upset Oregon State next week. I'm looking for the Rebels to be 4-0 going into the rivalry game at Nevada-Reno on October 3rd. That's the biggest game on the UNLV schedule each season.

I'm looking forward to this Saturday's opener at Sam Boyd Stadium - a cold front is predicted for later in the week. It looks as if it's going to be only about 90 degrees at kickoff .

Things That I Hate

Part One.

One of the things that I hate most in this world are football and basketball games that land right around the consensus betting line. Last night's Atlanta/San Diego game falls into that category.

Sports Monitor put out Atlanta as the Five Star Preseason Game of the Year. At worst, the game was a push for those who bet on Atlanta. You can see the line movements in Las Vegas HERE. For those of you who aren't fortunate to live (and wager) in Fabulous Las Vegas, you can look at what the offshore books listed HERE.

As soon as the game was released to members -- at 8:25 am Pacific, the Sports Monitor email account was hit by a gozillion messages. Phones have always rung off the hook when this occurs. Everyone has a different pointspread - or thinks that they are getting ripped off if their line is 1/2 point off the preferred line - or God forbid, a line different than the one you quote. I hate when that happens. For those of us who work in this industry - we can't fix that - even your mommy can't help. As the popular phrase says, "It is what it is". That's the nature of wagering. Options and prices vary with the individual market. We do what we do and once the game gets out to the bettors - Then it's their job to do the best to find the line that they're comfortable with. If not, move along to another game. Nobody will get hurt.

Now - If you take a look at what the pointspread was at at 8:25 am (and throughout the day), nobody can debate that most (if not all) bettors could have easily bet Atlanta at -2.5 points and won that game. Most of the email that came into this office from members told me that people had -2.5 points. Before I go on, I'm not encouraging these types of email either! I will tell you that these types of email are rarely answered as the question is largely rhetorical, right? Once an email or a telephone call regarding a pointspread comes into a professional handicapping office when we're busy taking care of the bigger picture of handling entire membership, many good manners are put aside.

Part Two.

It was one of my desires this season to quote pointspreads when releasing games that were near a key or volatile number - but after the early experiences of the 2009 football season, I will shy away from quoting pointspreads. I honestly had an altruistic reason for wanting to give out pointspreads on each game and I expect to re-visit this topic again. If you're a member, please know that it's your job to find the best number for your personal needs.

One of the inter-personal issues that occur at a professional handicapping office is that feelings get hurt if you claim to win a game when a member did not. Again - every single bettor thinks his line is THE LINE. This situation happens all the time in this industry. If the headline above said, "GAME OF THE YEAR WINS!" ... I would receive a vicious email or two from the guy and his brother who did not win. Therefore - no headline today. No celebration, no confetti, - I'll just stop by the two casinos that took my wagers on Atlanta and cash in my ticket and enjoy the winnings. I sincerely hope that you are doing the same today.

In Closing.

I wish you all a safe and joyful Sunday. I also hope that Chula-Vista California beats the bejeeebers out of Chinese Taipei in the Little League World Series Game this afternoon. It's just a pride issue for this American. Oh yes, another hope - that tonight's Chicago/Denver game goes over the total of 38 points. Wink.

God's blessings,
Greg Allen

Worst Uniform Patch In Sports

One of the items from the Little League Pledge.

The "I won't cheat" pledge.

"I won't cheat?" F—- you, Little League Baseball, you pretentious, fascist windbags. I taught my son not to cheat when he was two, so send your patches where they'll do some good ... Bud Selig's office, John Edwards, or the White House.

Little League World Series

I'm going to have a bit of fun and handicap the Little League World Series today. Each year, this spectacle captivates a huge International television audience and I'm one of those who'd rather watch a Little League World Series contest than a Major League Baseball game this time of the season.

United States Semi-Final
Chula Vista, California
over
Staten Island, New York

United States Semi-Final
Warner Robins, Georgia
over
San Antonio, Texas

International Semi-Final
Willemstad, Curacao
over
Taoyuan, Chinese Taipei
International Semi-Final
Chiba City, Japan
over
Reynosa, Mexico

I'll look for Chula Vista, California to meet Willemstad, Curacao in the Championship Game.
One more point today -- have you noticed that my Executive Selections are 9-2 against the pointspread this season?

Monday Night Football

Sports Monitor's Executive Selections sit at 4-1 for NFL preseason week number two - The same spot we were in this time last week. Last Monday, we took the over 33.5 points in the Giants/Panthers game to finish off week one with a 5-1 pointspread record.

If you're keeping score - My Executive Selections stand at 9-2 against the pointspread for the first two weeks of the season. How about that?

At this time, (it's 6:45 am) - It appears as if we are going to pass on tonight's single NFL event - but we will release all the plays from the services we monitor. Our members will have an informed set of opinions on tonight's Monday Night Football contest.

2009 Football Season - Only $695

How's your weekend going?

Our Executive Service ran the table yesterday with Chicago (-3), Washington (-3.5) and Cleveland (-3.5) all winning. That brings our Executive Selections to an outstanding 9-2 against the pointspread this season.

Greg Allen's Private Plays went 2-1 Saturday as the New York Yankees lost to Boston while both of Greg's NASCAR matchups romped to victory. Greg's two drivers actually finished one-two again this week. It's impossible to do better than that.

If you are curious about what an informed NASCAR writeup looks like, here's Gerg Allen's analysis from yesterday - exactly as it went to all members.

The NASCAR race today is from Bristol Motor Speedway - The Thunderdome. A typical race at this short track involves tons of contact, many cautions and about 15 cars finishing on the lead lap. I've found two matchups that appear to provide a good advantage to us, providing bad racing luck of course.

NASCAR
SHARPIE 500
7:30 pm Eastern

MARK MARTIN -110
OVER
J GORDON
I had mark Martin last week and he had a top-3 car all race until he ran out of fuel within eyesight of the finish line and had 30 cars pass him within 5 seconds. The number 5 car is dialed in again as this team actually stopped practicing early yesterday because it was obvious they could not improve on the setup. Mark Martin was fastest in practice and then he went out and qualified for the pole. That gave him first choice for the pit stall as well- that's a major advantage at this track. A bad-fast car in first pit position is the perfect combination for success at this venue.

KYLE BUSCH -110
OVER
T STEWART

Tony Stewart leads the Sprint Cup series in points and it's starting to look as if Kyle Busch will miss the playoffs. Kyle is hungry and he needs to finish up front and get some help in order to have a chance at running for the championship. Kyle was wrecked out (by a 19 year old rookie) of last night's Nationwide series race and the fans cheered wildly that he was out of the contest. Kyle leads all drivers in laps led at this track since they went to the new car. Kyle has led 832 laps in the five COT races at Bristol. Only one other driver has led as many as 500 laps here. Kyle's average finishing position is 6th at Bristol - best in this field. Tony Stewart's average finish at Bristol is 15.6. I'll expect an aggressive race from Kyle today and better driving than last night -- from those around him.

Editor note:
Mark Martin finished in 2nd place.
Jeff Gordon finished 23rd - one lap down.

Kyle Busch won the race.
Tony Stewart finished 33rd - 11 laps down.

Game On

Last night, our NFL Executive Service scored big with a two unit win as Dallas (-3) destroyed Tennessee 30-10. That brings the Executive Service to 6-2 against the pointspread this season.

Greg's Private Play Service released one play -- the New York Yankees who outscored most NFL clubs by pounding the Boston Red Sox.

The Saturday NFL schedule is all night games and Greg's Private Play Service looks to release a couple selections for the NASCAR race at Bristol.

Yesterday's Private Play

Here is the exact Private Play that members received yesterday. I post it here today because many long-time members have never looked in on Greg's Private Play service. Greg Allen takes great pride in his well-researched plays.

From Tuesday:
My Private Play for Tuesday is the New York Yankees minus the runs.

NEW YORK YANKEES -1.5 runs (Sabathia)
OVER
OAKLAND ATHLETICS (Mazzaro)
10:05 pm Eastern

For those of you with a stronger fortitude, the Yankees are -225 on the money line. The Yankees are playing great baseball and they've won 24 of their last 32 games. In 19 of their last 20 wins, the Yankees have won by at least two runs. That catches my attention today as the Yankees go against an Oakland squad that they've beat in nine of the last 11 contests. All seven games this season between these clubs have been decided by two runs or more. C.C. Sabathia goes to the hill for the Bombers today - Sabathia worked 15.2 innings over his last two outings, allowing just five hits, four walks and one earned run. He's also struck out 19 along the way. Sabathia is 5-1 since the All-Star break with a 2.98 ERA, one full point lower than his ERA during the first half. Sabathia's ERA during night games is more than a point and a half lower than when he starts during the day. The Yankees are facing Vin Mazzaro today who has yielded at least seven hits in his last eight starts. Mazzaro has logged just one home win this season in eight stars while posting a 6.21 ERA. Opponents are hitting .321 off Vin Mazzaro this season - the Yankees are hitting .400 off Mazzaro this season. Let's talk a bit more about Sabathia. Over his past two starts, Sabathia has seemed to find a new gear, going 2-0 with a 0.57 ERA while striking out 19 and limiting opponents to a .100 batting average. On the season, opponents have batted just .235 off Sabathia. Sabathia was dominant at in his last outing - Thursday at Safeco Field. He's on fire. I'll look for the Yankees to bounce out of their two game losing streak with their ace tonight.

Final: Yankees 7 Athletics 2

Tuesday Wrap Up / Five wins - One Loss

Our Executive Service won again last night as the Panthers and Giants game went over the total of 33.5 points.

The Executive Selections finished the week at five wins and just one loss. Both of our highest rated releases won as well. If you were counting units, we won 5.9 units on the week.

If you have not signed up for the New Sports Monitor - there is a link to the right of this message. It's only $695 to stay on through the Superbowl.

Monday Night Football

Two games are on the NFL preseason calendar tonight. It's been a very good week of Executive Selections as we stand at 4-1 against the pointspread.

Greg's four NASCAR Private Play selections looked as if they were going to all come in the top-5 yesterday before Jimmy Johnson (was running 1st) and Mark Martin (top 5) ran out of gas before the finish line. As it was, Greg had Brian Vickers and Jeff Gordon who wound up finishing in first and second place for Greg. The NASCAR Private Plays finished at 2-2 for the NASCAR CARFAX 400 after dominating the race.

The Sports Monitor Executive Selections went 1-1 against the pointspread Saturday night with Buffalo (-3) and Cleveland (+3).
The Executive Selections stand at 4-1 against the spread for the season and both of the highest rated plays have won.

The only items going out today will be the Private Plays. Greg Allen is one of the few professional handicappers who does an in-depth analysis of NASCAR races. Last year, Greg went 29-8 with his race matchups down the stretch after having a wonderful season leading up to the chase.

How's your weekend going?

NFL Preseason Week One

The Hall of Fame Game was the lid-lifter on the NFL football season four days ago as Sports Monitor released the Buffalo Bills (+3) as a one unit play. That game ended up right on the number and was a push for those who bet the side.

Tonight, there are four NFL games on tap. I'm looking forward to the first win of the 2009 football season tonight.

Members should look forward to a winning weekend as I look forward to about six rated Executive Selections.
