Great Week Of Football - Eight Wins, Three Losses

It was great to put up a great football week this past weekend. We got out to a quality start on Wednesday with a one unit winner on UTEP. Our College Executive Selection came in at 5-2 against the pointspread and we won both top plays. Our top plays were a five star on UNLV and a four star on Air Force. Both were easy covers throughout. Of the two college losses, one was Michigan State who lost on the last second touchdown from Iowa State.

Our NFL Executive Selections came in at 3-1 against the pointspread. Sunday - Our three unit selection was Indianapolis, our two unit selection was Pittsburgh and the loss was a one unit play on the New York Giants. Last night on Monday Night Football, we closed out with a two unit play on Philadelphia.

In the hangar-shaped Kibbie Dome, the Hawai'i football was disassembled.

The Warriors not only lost to rejuvenated Idaho — 35-23, in part because of DeMaundray Woolridge's four touchdown rushes — but they also lost wideout Rodney Bradley to a season-ending broken leg.

And, after suffering their fourth consecutive defeat, they appear to have lost their way.

"It's embarrassing to our program," said Blaze Soares, a senior linebacker. "Losing to these guys, it sucks. I never lost to them throughout my career. To lose to them my senior year, it's just an embarrassment."

Fresno State versus Hawaii

One of my favorite places to see a college football game is at Fresno State. Bulldog Stadium is a real treat and I enjoy parking my car just a short walk away from the stadium on the lawn of a very friendly frat house. They always insist on doing a shot of tequila with their visitors. This frat house has all the residents put their sound system speakers facing outwards in the windows on game day. It's wild. The tailgating at a Fresno State game and the atmosphere is as enjoyable as you'll ever encounter. I watch this program closely and look forward to my next visit to Fresno.

Here's what I know about the 2009 Bulldogs. They took Wisconsin to two overtimes at Wisconsin. They looked decent against 10th ranked Boise State while out rushing and out gaining the Broncos. They held onto the ball for three quarters against Cincinnati and managed to lose that game. They want a win tonight and they want a convincing win.

I'm looking for Fresno's Ryan Mathews to run all over the field tonight. Matthews ranks second in the nation with an average of 148 yards per game and is registering close to seven yards per carry. Hawaii allowed 352 yards rushing last week in a 27-6 loss to Louisiana Tech and is ranked 102nd (out of 120 teams) nationally in run defense. The Warriors' usually potent pass offense was limp last week, too. Hawaii failed to produce a touchdown for the first time in 62 games. Meanwhile - things got worse. Hawaii will be without their star Quarterback Greg Alexander. Hawaii will be using their third string quarterback since their 2nd string fractured a finger. So, in comes Bryant Moniz a native Hawaiian and former quarterback at Fresno City College. Basically, a junior college RESERVE walk on quarterback. In 2007, Moniz was taking backup snaps behind heralded but troubled (think criminal) transfer Derek Shaw at Fresno City College. Then just weeks before the season opener, Shaw was suspended for walking out of practice, and Moniz was thrust into the starting role. Moniz left Fresno City after one year and moved back to the island, where he enrolled in a local community college but didn't play football last season. Yep - A junior college backup. Now, he's taking snaps for Hawaii. Fresno State will be going after him.

Hawaii won in overtime at Fresno last year in a very bitter contest and I'll expect Fresno State to return the favor. I'm betting on Fresno State to win and cover against a short-handed Hawaii squad.

...and it wasn't even that close. Fresno State took a 42-3 lead into the fourth quarter before calling off the Bulldogs.

The 80's were a good time.



Anyway, I thought that I would look for something funny this morning since it's 6 am and I just got home from the UNLV/Oregon State game five hours ago. For those of you on the East coast - the game concluded about 2:15 am Eastern, Oregon State 23 UNLV 21. Don't want to talk about it.

OK, I'll say one thing. Referees who call pass interference on a third-and-26 from your own 15-yard line late in the game on a ball that looks overthrown should be interrogated by Jack Bauer.
Really. I do not want to talk about it.

The Phillies just got swept by Houston this weekend and they'll be a bit grumpy. Washington offers the perfect remedy. Washington has lost eight of their last nine games and 16 of their last 20. They are a dependable "go against" team. My first thought was, "Philadelphia always beats Washington". Hmmm, perhaps that was my fourth thought. Then, I looked it up and saw that I was correct - the Phillies have won their last seven against the Nationals. Pedro Martinez looks to follow his masterful performance in beating Tim Lincecum and the Giants in a 2-1 victory last Thursday. The Phillies have won all five of Pedro's starts and he carries a 23-3 strikeout-walk ratio into this start. Philadelphia has also won its last six games in which it has faced John Lannan. Lannan is 0-5 with a 5.89 ERA in seven career outings against the Phillies. Lannan is 0-1 with a 7.97 ERA in his last four starts. He gave up five runs over five innings last Tuesday in a 7-0 loss to San Diego. I'm betting that Philadelphia breaks their losing streak tonight.

72% Pointspread Winners

My Executive Selections were released to members at 5:30 pm Eastern last night and they both made it a comfortable night for bettors.

Two units Miami Dolphins (+2) won outright at New Orleans. That brings Sports Monitor's NFL preseason pointspread record to 12 wins and 5 losses - 71% winners.

We opened the 2009 College Football season with a one unit play on Boise State (-3). The Broncos got out to a 19-0 lead and just walked it in. Of course, I had to deal with that whole dilemma of what to watch, the Boise State game or the Michael Jackson funeral. Nah.

This should be a wonderful weekend of college football as games will be played and televised Friday, Saturday, Sunday and on Labor Day Monday. If you haven't seen the schedule yet, it's an interesting opening week college schedule that finishes up Monday with the Miami-Florida/Florida State prime time contest.

Overall, that brings our 2009 football pointspread overall total to a wonderful 13 wins and 5 losses - 72% pointspread winners. That's as good as it gets and I'm very proud to put up numbers like that. Let's keep up the good work - I pledge to do my best all season.

I do not like giving out plays at this price but half the games on the schedule today are at least 2-1 --- and for good reasons. Today, I'm betting against another minor league callup. Houston is going to give Felipe Paulino another chance at a start. Paulino will make his first start since July 3rd, when he gave up nine hits and nine runs (eight earned) in two innings in a 13-0 loss to the Giants. He's been relegated to bullpen duty since, mostly in mop-up roles. It's hard to imagine that this guy will even make the team next season. Paulino has a great fastball but it does not fool anyone - in fact, opponents have hit .371 off Paulino on the road this season. Over his two year career, opponents have hit .322 off Paulino. Chicago sends Ted Lilly to the hill and he's hoping for a bit of support from his team. Lilly has notched three consecutive solid starts since his return from the disabled list on August 17th. He is 0-1 but has posted a 1.86 ERA in that stretch - as he's been backed by one total run of support. Lilly has a quality start in all 10 of his outings at Wrigley Field and a 1.92 ERA there - holding opponents to a .220 batting average. Ted Lilly has a 3.57 ERA in winning all three starts versus the Astros this season, and is 6-0 with a 2.20 ERA in seven starts against them dating back to 2007. The Astros are 6-18 on the road since July 18th.

Did you know? The Cubs are 23-6 in Lilly's last 29 home starts.

Boston is going to make make that Wild Card slot as their team is the strongest it's been all season. Boston has won 10 of their last 13 overall. Boston's team batting average is .305 over their last 10 games and they've hit .315 off right-handers. The Rays will get their first experience of life without Scott Kazmir tonight - this was his spot in the rotation. Tampa Bay will be starting one of their September callups tonight - Andy Sonnanstine who was sent down in June after compiling a 6.61 ERA in 15 starts. Sonnanstine's biggest problem was with right-handed hitters, allowing a .370 average. Triple-A opponents batted .323 off Sonnanstine the last three months. This appears to be a quick fix to fill a spot in the rotation and Sonnanstine was rested and able to step in here. It's my guess that this will be his last start of the season - he's just not ready for prime time. Boston's Jon Lester has posted a quality start in each of his past five outings - and 15 of his last 16 -- allowing three earned runs or fewer in 15 of his previous 16 appearances dating back to May 31. I'm looking for the Red Sox to reverse their recent slump at Tropicana Field and against the Rays. The Rays have fallen five game back of the Red Sox in the Wild card chase and the Red Sox look to silent the cowbells. It's the Red Sox over the Rays tonight.

Did you know? The Red Sox are 41-14 in their last 55 games following an off day.

My Private Play for Monday August 31st is the New York Yankees.

The Baltimore Orioles have lost their last eight Monday games and the news get worse. The Yankees are in town. The Yankees have taken 16 of the last 19 against the Orioles. New York has won seven in a row against Baltimore this year while outscoring the Orioles by nearly three runs per game. New York starter Andy Pettitte is undefeated in six starts since July 30, going 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA (38.0 innings, 11 earned runs) over that span. Pettitte is 25-6 lifetime versus the Orioles. The Yankees are on fire and are coming in off a three game sweep of the White Sox - New York outscored Chicago 23-5 in the series. Baltimore is just 14-29 since the All-Star break while New York has been heating up all summer. I'm on the Bombers tonight.

This is one of those events that on any other day would be just another NFL preseason game. Yes, it's just another preseason game, but this one just so happens to be nationally televised by a major network - in a Sunday prime time slot. So basically, nobody wants to look stupid - and everyone wants to look good. Especially the starting quarterbacks and the head coaches. Kyle Orton and Jay Cutler will be the lead story and they'll know it. The Denver crowd won't miss a beat. Jay Cutler returns to Invesco Field to a crowd that will boo his every move. Kyle Orton has reportedly struggled to learn Chicago's offense (3 interceptions in week one). Orton actually went 18 for 26 last week against Seattle and is working diligently to understand the playbook. He'll be throwing more tonight. Both starting QB's should still be in this game in the third quarter. Throw in the wide receiver controversy at Denver and I look forward to a couple offenses who try to make things happen tonight. I noticed a lot of scoring in the NFL this week - for week number three - a week that's known for stating QB's to get their last real game situation workout in. I'm betting that the Bears and Broncos go over the total tonight on NBC-TV.

I was reading a news report out of San Francisco about last night's game. It said, "It was unseasonably warm for a summer night in the Bay Area: 75 degrees at first pitch." I was at a Triple-A game last night here in Las Vegas and it was 105 degrees at first pitch. Go figure. Tonight, I'm betting that San Francisco closes the gap on the Colorado Rockies. The Giants have been very reliable at AT&T Park this season and have won 39 of their last 58 home games. Left-hander Barry Zito faced these Rockies last Monday - giving up three hits, no earned runs and went away without a decision. If you know more about that game, he actually did not deserve a decision - either way. Just my opinion. Barry Zito has faced the Rockies twice this season, pitched well both times and has held them to a .119 batting average. Colorado has been weak against left-handers on the road all season while posting a .210 batting average. Barry Zito is in the midst of his hottest streak since signing as a free agent with the team in 2007 - his ERA is 2.08 since the All-Star break. This is the time of the season that Zito typically heats up - Going into this season, Zito was 70-36 after the All-Star break with a 3.47 ERA. Before the break, his numbers were 53-57 with a 4.14 ERA. Zito's 2-2 with a 2.03 ERA during his career against the Rockies. This year his ERA against the Rockies is 0.00 in two starts, both no-decisions. The Giants again tonight.

They call San Francisco pitcher Tim Lincicum "The Freak". Lincicum is 7-1 at AT&T Park this season, owns a 1.98 ERA and has struck out 113 batters in 95 innings pitched. These teams are in a dog fight for the NL playoffs - I'll be careful to avoid the conversation about first place versus wild card here. The Giants are a very strong home team and have gone 41-21 at AT&T this season. This is a very good pitching matchup as Colorado has their ace on the hill today as well - I'll take the Giants on the strength of their team at home this season.

Did you know? The Rockies are 10-23 in Jimenez's last 33 road starts.

One of the things that I hate most in this world are football and basketball games that land right around the consensus betting line. Last night's Atlanta/San Diego game falls into that category.

Sports Monitor put out Atlanta as the Five Star Preseason Game of the Year. At worst, the game was a push for those who bet on Atlanta. You can see the line movements in Las Vegas HERE. As soon as the game was released to members -- at 8:25 am Pacific, the Sports Monitor email account was hit by a gozillion messages. Phones have always rung off the hook when this occurs. Everyone has a different pointspread - or thinks that they are getting ripped off if their line is 1/2 point off the preferred line - or God forbid, a line different than the one you quote. I hate when that happens. For those of us who work in this industry - we can't fix that - even your mommy can't help. As the popular phrase says, "It is what it is". That's the nature of wagering. Options and prices vary with the individual market. We do what we do and once the game gets out to the bettors - Then it's their job to do the best to find the line that they're comfortable with. If not, move along to another game. Nobody will get hurt.

Now - If you take a look at what the pointspread was at at 8:25 am (and throughout the day), nobody can debate that most (if not all) bettors could have easily bet Atlanta at -2.5 points and won that game. Most of the email that came into this office from members told me that people had -2.5 points. Before I go on, I'm not encouraging these types of email either! I will tell you that these types of email are rarely answered as the question is largely rhetorical, right? Once an email or a telephone call regarding a pointspread comes into a professional handicapping office when we're busy taking care of the bigger picture of handling entire membership, many good manners are put aside.

Part Two.

It was one of my desires this season to quote pointspreads when releasing games that were near a key or volatile number - but after the early experiences of the 2009 football season, I will shy away from quoting pointspreads. I honestly had an altruistic reason for wanting to give out pointspreads on each game and I expect to re-visit this topic again. If you're a member, please know that it's your job to find the best number for your personal needs.

One of the inter-personal issues that occur at a professional handicapping office is that feelings get hurt if you claim to win a game when a member did not. Again - every single bettor thinks his line is THE LINE. This situation happens all the time in this industry. If the headline above said, "GAME OF THE YEAR WINS!" ... I would receive a vicious email or two from the guy and his brother who did not win. Therefore - no headline today. No celebration, no confetti, - I'll just stop by the two casinos that took my wagers on Atlanta and cash in my ticket and enjoy the winnings. I sincerely hope that you are doing the same today.

I wish you all a safe and joyful Sunday. I also hope that Chula-Vista California beats the bejeeebers out of Chinese Taipei in the Little League World Series Game this afternoon. It's just a pride issue for this American. Oh yes, another hope - that tonight's Chicago/Denver game goes over the total of 38 points. Wink.

Monday Night Football

How's your weekend going?

Our Executive Service ran the table yesterday with Chicago (-3), Washington (-3.5) and Cleveland (-3.5) all winning. That brings our Executive Selections to an outstanding 9-2 against the pointspread this season.

Greg Allen's Private Plays went 2-1 Saturday as the New York Yankees lost to Boston while both of Greg's NASCAR matchups romped to victory. Greg's two drivers actually finished one-two again this week. It's impossible to do better than that.

The NASCAR race today is from Bristol Motor Speedway - The Thunderdome. A typical race at this short track involves tons of contact, many cautions and about 15 cars finishing on the lead lap. I've found two matchups that appear to provide a good advantage to us, providing bad racing luck of course.

I had mark Martin last week and he had a top-3 car all race until he ran out of fuel within eyesight of the finish line and had 30 cars pass him within 5 seconds. The number 5 car is dialed in again as this team actually stopped practicing early yesterday because it was obvious they could not improve on the setup. Mark Martin was fastest in practice and then he went out and qualified for the pole. That gave him first choice for the pit stall as well- that's a major advantage at this track. A bad-fast car in first pit position is the perfect combination for success at this venue.

Tony Stewart leads the Sprint Cup series in points and it's starting to look as if Kyle Busch will miss the playoffs. Kyle is hungry and he needs to finish up front and get some help in order to have a chance at running for the championship. Kyle was wrecked out (by a 19 year old rookie) of last night's Nationwide series race and the fans cheered wildly that he was out of the contest. Kyle leads all drivers in laps led at this track since they went to the new car. Kyle has led 832 laps in the five COT races at Bristol. Only one other driver has led as many as 500 laps here. Kyle's average finishing position is 6th at Bristol - best in this field. Tony Stewart's average finish at Bristol is 15.6. I'll expect an aggressive race from Kyle today and better driving than last night -- from those around him.
